10 tips as to how you can build trust

In a previous blog I provided the fundamentals of the what, when and how to of trust. Here I would like to share how as a leader of performance or ‘Chief Performance Officer’ you can be the orchestrator.

Here’s my starter for 10:

1. Be the leaders of innovation for business performance success with trust at the heart. Learning and development is unlikely to solve it all but as you curate content for people make sure you have a consistent message. Work with leaders to establish the ‘right’ behaviours for the business. As Laura Overton says that Learning and develpment cant do things in isolation but can be they can be a significant part.

2. Be a trusted member and work alongside leaders as architects and facilitators to support the evolution of work, delivering business and building skills for the future.

3. Enable the development of trust by initiating, supporting and being the orchestrators of successful communities and learning interventions.

4. Act as journalist — be curious through trusting relationships and build stories that can be shared to support the development of high performance.

5. Don’t be rigid as to what you are called as the community will define that. Just need to be good at marketing how you get called to the table in the first place

6. Be facilitators of building of trust We know that people who might be classed as the outliers tend to be the most successful (Julian Stodd — Trust Conference 2018) Work the pockets of the business where they are working on the fringes and support the creation of trust so people feel comfortable that they belong.

8. Build a reputation for delivering results for the business. L&D people, like all professions, need to build a community of trust with their stakeholders.

9. As a facilitator, you need to have the ability to build trust quickly. One option is to talk through the ‘rules’ within the attendees / customers at the start.

10. Understand the primary and secondary levels of trust, where your communities are, and how best you can work with these to bring transformation and success.

Learning and development professionals have a responsibility and are (should be) the leaders in the organisation / business that drive and orchestrate environments for high performance, productivity and prosperity (wellbeing). Working to build and maintain trusting relationships can be at the heart of this success.

Where are you with this? And what is your number 1 take away which will make the difference?

I love rolling my sleeves up and getting under the skin of a significant challenge working with high energy, new and established teams (mostly entrepreneurs, tech and small businesses) to be productive, high performing and prosperous (healthy and happy).
