“I know what the business needs to it put it on a path to continued success and I need to implement some learning opportunities but don’t want to get it wrong, I want it to be fantastic”
These are the great words of a colleague working in the world of talent, learning and organisation development who wanted to make sure the ducks were in line or the project landed brilliantly with perfection.
In my experience you will never achieve the dotting of the ‘i’s’ and the crossing of the ‘t’s’ as each day brings new opportunities and choices. Decisions today are fantastic given the context but tomorrow brings a new setting whether in a team, organisation, individual change in direction or the wider economic world of work.
So what does this mean for you?
Beta is a word more associated with the implementation of technology where the system is to be nearly ready to go live. At this stage select audiences are given access to test it.
Today many systems from global technology companies are launched and continue to be in ‘beta’. This is not because they have implemented to their customers a substandard product its just the context and opportunities are moving so fast. The moment they decided to ‘go live’ was the right moment. By doing it this way all users and developers are part of its development journey and in doing so create a better product by working as a community.
You and your teams have an opportunity to complete projects and show progress to clients quickly by taking the same approach. Nothing is sacred, #gettingstarted is the key and create pockets of success that you can share.
At the recent CIPD LnD Show 2017 I was reminded of this by two great presentations by Andy Hurren, npower, and Brian Murphy, Citi.
“Its easier to get support for something which works, than to get approval for something new” Andy Hurren.
So what does this mean to you?
Here are a few tips to #gettingstarted
- Start using your new service and or product with a specific small audience where you know you will have advocates that will sell the successful story in the future.
- Plan your implementation with easily accessible feedback opportunities
- Have a clear point in time where you will assess the successes.
- Share successes stories as soon as possible and then others will want to have it.
- Allow the whole community to guide you through the journey and dont stick rigidly to your plan as it may be out of date from the moment you have written it!
So start small,
listen to the feedback,
create success stories,
test and adjust and repeat
