As Nilofer Merchant reminded the audience in her TED talk “Have a meeting? Take a walk” We spend on average 9.3 hours sitting which is more than we sleep.
This inactivity is killing us.
The lack of physical inactivity increases our rate of breast and colon cancer by 10%, heart disease by 6% and Type 2 by 7%. Just 5 minutes a day can reduce ageing.
In addition there is a growing trend of obesity (and associated complications like diabetes and cancer), in many cases linked to our lack of exercise and overwhelming reliance on simple carbohydrates (e.g. high sugar refined and high sugar fruits.
On top of this businesses are having to move quickly to stay competitive in the market place and the rise of technology means people are going to need to evolve and show their worth quickly.
The speed of change means the lack of development will leave you behind in the paid working world and many feeling undervalued.
People are wanting to feel valued and have a chance to develop or they move on.
There is a worryingly increase in the number of anti-depressants being subscribed alongside a wealth of people suffering from mental health disease. The environment that should be supporting us to thrive is in fact doing the opposite.
So what has this got to do with an outdoor coach?
It gets you to unlock your potential and take exercise
Outdoor coaching is a combination of personal and business coaching (by a qualified and accredited coach) and taking exercise in the outdoors.
a. Coaching is all about you taking and owning the agenda and its content. Its a time to see your own reflection and build strategies for action that you are accountable for.
b. The outdoor bit comes by taking a walk in the outdoors, preferably somewhere green where you can benefit from taking more steps and get the benefits of being in the outdoors. It could just mean finding a space away from your desk that cuts out the noise and allows you to absorb the benefits of nature.
The opportunities are endless and as you are in the driving seat so you set the parameters of success and will build opportunities. Here are a few that mix the benefits of coaching and the outdoors:
- Clarity
- Accountability
- Direction
- Reflection
- Time allocated for specific development needs.
- Take more exercise
- Reducing stress, anxiety, inflammation, fatigue
- Increase immune system, your ability to focus and the strength of your eyesight
- Perform better on creative tasks
- Reduce mortality and risk of cancer particularly in forests
Outdoor coaching is for all those busy ambitious professionals and entrepreneurs that are keen to get better results, develop and take exercise.
By being pulled away from your desk at an allocated short period of time, know you can focus on your needs means every second is valuable and drives you closer to your picture of success.
What is your next move to success? How are you adding to your longevity and be successful at work?
