I have seen urgent events happen in many ways. There is the crisis where the boss seems to go into panic mode shouts and which continues the spiral of stress. Then there is the occasion where people seemed to be focused, talking with each other, checking things are going on and you get the sense that everyone across the organisation has rolled up their sleeves for the best interest in making it work.

What stands out is the ability to keep the calm, the productivity, great working atmosphere and of course the favourable results.

The question is what has been the value of leadership here?

Context and culture will always be a guide as to the appropriate intervention. I believe leadership is simple and although we like a good piece of HBR research, well written book or some guru spouting off their latest idea its actually some very simple rules that can really make the difference.

It was refreshing to hear from a Partner at one of the big four consultancy firms he really believed that in his position it was all about getting the right behaviours and working with individuals to find discover and build them.

Whatever your bent on leadership, I get the sense we all recognise situations where we have had a great leader. Things seem to run like clockwork whether the pressure is on or not, people feel genuinely nurtured to support them and they are decisive people who inspire will clarity.

Here are some of the traits you might relate to yourself as a leader or what you like in a leader:

  • Givers
  • listeners
  • decisive
  • empathetic
  • integral
  • honest
  • passionate
  • realistic
  • ready to roll their sleeves up
  • authentic and are truly themselves at work
  • support their loved ones

Is that what you think?

How are do you assess your leaders and build on their strengths for the future?

So what does that mean to you and where do you start?

How to get started?

  1. What is success for leaders with you / us?
  2. Establish the leadership behaviours to support your values for the business going forward.
  3. Seek out the people that already display them and find a means to share their successes.
  4. List the interventions that you can use to support the development and maintenance of the ‘right’ skills
  5. Support leaders and managers to continually share and build on these with their teams through videos and marketing material that can be quickly shared at the beginning of meetings.

Leaders as professionals and leaders of people both need the traits to succeed.

What are you doing to support your development as a leader?

What are your measures of success?

What is a successful leaders development plan?

How do successful leaders evolve with the market to maintain currency?

I challenge you to find your course of action…or have a chat with a someone so you can air your ideas in a confidential and engaging space. Here are a few more ideas to get you on track.
